Mercedes-AMG   has secured the fastest lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife for an 'executive class' car with its   GT 4-Door Coupé .  Secured with a 2021-model-year GT 63 S 4Matic+ driven by AMG development engineer Demian Schaffert, a time of 7min 27.80sec for the complete lap has been officially recognised by the track.  The time beats the previous segment record of 7:29.81 set by Stuttgart rival Porsche with a Panamera Turbo S earlier this year. It also beats the previous lap time set by a GT 4-Door Coupé (again driven by Schaffert) in 2018 by 2.3sec.  The 2021 version of the 630bhp GT 63 S, which has been in production since September, is claimed to feature subtle tweaks to the chassis and other fine-tuning measures. The car used in the record was standard aside from being fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, the optional aero package and bucket seats with a four-point harness for safety. Mercedes c...

More Powerful 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the first under the Stellantis family of vehicles to get the company's new 3.0-liter I-6 engine dubbed the "Hurricane," available in new standard- and high-output configurations. We've already learned the new hi-po Hurricane engine option will be a $2,000 premium over the standard 6.4-liter V-8 Hemi on regular-wheelbase Grand Wagoneers (it's standard on the long-wheelbase L versions that arrive for the 2023 model year), but that premium cost is supposed to come with new fuel efficiency gains, which the EPA has now announced.

The rear-wheel drive, high-output 3.0-liter I-6 equipped 2022 Grand Wagoneer is rated at 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined, compared to the 6.4-liter's 13 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 15 mpg combined, according to the fueleconomy.gov website.

A measly 1-2 miles per gallon better here or there doesn't sound like a lot, but remember that the new high-output version of the I-6 delivers 510 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, compared to the standard 6.4-liter V-8's output of 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. As we can see, the new I-6 Hurricane engine delivers on its promise of improved fuel economy without jeopardizing performance. In fact, it's quite an improvement in every regard, at least on paper so far; finding 2 mpg combined while also gaining 30 horsepower is quite an achievement.

We'll have to wait for real-world testing to see if those fuel economy figures hold up, but right now, the EPA estimates an annual fuel cost savings of $500 if you select the Hurricane over the V-8, based on 15,000 annual miles driven at current fuel prices. Again, the new engine is a $2,000 premium on the regular-wheelbase models, so you'd have to keep the car more than four years to actually see any savings in that regard.

The Hurricane engine debuted earlier this year with both a high output and standard output configuration. The standard output engine's EPA estimates haven't been published yet (it'll be standard on the Wagoneer L), and it hasn't shown up in any Stellantis vehicles just yet either, though it's likely coming very soon to the smaller Jeep Wagoneer which currently offers a standard 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine. It will also likely offer a similar, marginal improvement in fuel economy over the standard V-8, while also offering more power and performance.
